What makes Sarah Chen great? Discussions of her legacy often emphasize her role as Taiwan's "voice of urban women." While that cultural influence is undeniable, Chen's greatest contribution to Mandopop lies elsewhere: she brought Western pop and ballad traditions into Mandarin songs, raising the genre's musical and expressive standard.
陈淑桦的贡献何在？官方评述通常提到她在八九十年代台湾文化变迁中起到的“都市女子代言人”作用。但撇开这种文化影响，陈淑桦对华语音乐起到了转变性的作用。最重要的，是她将西方流行和抒情歌曲的精髓融入中文演唱，提升了华语流行音乐的水准。

In 1981, Sarah Chen appeared on CTS with Pan An-Bang to introduce and perform her new song "Shy Flower," written by her long-time collaborator Joseph Ye. This issue covers Sarah Chen's career arch from the 1981 segment to her final album release in 1998.

Miracle of Love, Sarah Chen's second EMI English album (1987), was her personal favorite. The original album went out of print, and a later vinyl reissue appears to have been mastered at an incorrect speed and pitch, altering how her vocals sound. From a rare 1987 cassette, we restored her performance of Billy Ocean's 1986 No. 1 hit There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry).
陈淑桦最喜爱的英文专辑是1987年的《爱的奇迹》，但由于百代的变故，首版早已绝版，后来的黑胶再版疑似把音高和速度弄错了，影响了她的歌声。我们从一盘稀有的1987卡带中还原了陈淑桦翻唱 Billy Ocean 1986年冠军单曲《会有悲伤的歌》。

Evergreen Night Jasmine
Night Jasmine, a 1940's traditional Chinese folk song, was popularized by Teresa Teng in 1978. Mainland China banned the song for being too bourgeois, which only increased Teng's popularity.
Less known, however, was Sarah Chen's 1977 rendition, performed when Chen was just 18. With rudimentary instrumental, Chen's song left virtually no trace as her record label folded.
One of 19 songs that both Teng and Chen performed, Night Jasmine created an unbreakable bond between the two Mandopop divas. Here we explore their connection and mutual respect.
