Ever since Chen joined EMI, coverage of her often mixed her private life with her music, while reports on producers focused on their music and technique. "(In Night Jasmine) In her version, Sarah Chen's voice gave the song a sweet, gentle, and lingering interpretation, an effortless delivery, like whispers by the ear. This also had to do with the arrangement in her version. Teresa Teng's arrangement is clearly better suited for Teng, who gave a grander interpretation. If Sarah Chen were using this arrangement, she likely would have adjusted how she sang. Still, thank you for letting me hear this fusion."

The music was coming to an end; Sarah Chen had pressed her love into the line “there’ll be sad songs to make you cry” five times. When she ended with a whisper, “I love you,” I happened to be looking into the imploring eyes of my cats. “She loves you,” I said to the quiet, pretty one, as the singer-cat trotted over to show off his vocals and affection. “Be warned,” the shelter lady had told me when I first got them, “they will move closer and closer to the inner circle of your heart.”

Love, in its many forms, is a miracle. And music makes it eternal.

Sarah Chen’s “There’ll Be Sad Songs,” originally by Billy Ocean, appeared on her 1987 album Miracle of Love. Ocean’s 1986 song topped the Billboard Hot 100, riding on his wave of successful hits. Covering such a recent, global hit, by a Taiwanese female singer was no small feat. But if anyone could carry it, it was Sarah Chen. Experienced singing in English, she was also skilled in interpreting ambiguous lines of love songs. News report at the time suggests that she was coming off a breakup and slowly accepting it. On the record, while staying close to Ocean’s version, Chen softens the song with her slightly off-beat style, pouring her love out like a gentle river. To my ears, she isn’t just accepting lost love; she extends comfort to the ex who inflicted so much pain. 

I became a Sarah Chen fan only recently. Aside from one song that triggered a memory flashback, her other songs carried no nostalgia for me. But there’s a special magic in her singing that has captivated me for over a year. Notwithstanding the large number of romantic ballads she sang, Chen’s magic isn't mere longing for romance; it's her palpable love of music itself. 

The contrast between Chen’s gentle approach and Ocean’s more outward, heartfelt version is notable. Chen sings the chorus line one extra time, as if to compensate for her more restrained expression of love. By the time she breathes "I love you," I believed it, and judging by their eager replies, so did the cats. Chen may have softened romantic love, but her love for music overpowers any restraint. That unmistakable love, where the singer fuses with her music, gives her work a lasting spell.

And so the Miracle of Love lives on. Even as the singer has all but vanished for 30 years, her love of music is as deeply felt today as it was in 1987, when she recorded it.

音乐渐进尾声，陈淑桦已经五次将爱意烙在那句“会有悲伤的歌让你落泪”里。当她以“I love you”作结时，我正好对视着我家的猫。“听到了吗，Sarah说她爱你，”我告诉那只安静漂亮的猫。另一只爱唱歌的猫听见了，跑过来炫耀他的嗓子和热情。“小心哦”，收养所的女士当初提醒我说，“它们会一点一点住进你的内心深处去。”

爱有很多种，种种都是奇迹。而音乐让它永恒。

《会有悲伤的歌》是陈淑桦翻唱 Billy Ocean 的作品， 收录在她1987年的专辑《Miracle of Love》里。原曲是Ocean在1986年拿下 Billboard Hot 100 冠军的歌，乘上了他连连走红的东风。要翻唱这首刚在全球爆红的歌，对一位台湾女歌手而言并不容易。也只有陈淑桦有胆接受这个挑战。她早年以英文演唱起家，在华语歌坛里唱了不少歌词含蓄的情歌。当年的报道说她那时刚走出分手之痛，这首歌便是有感而发。她的版本接近Ocean的原版，但她不受节拍驱动的唱法把这首歌软化了，爱意便如温柔的河水缓缓倾注出去。在我听来，她不只是在接受失恋，更是在抚慰伤了她心的人。

我只是最近才成陈淑桦的歌迷。除了最初《爱是唯一的理由》触动了记忆闪回，我对她其它歌没有怀旧之感，但也能感受到她歌声里的特别魔力。陈淑桦是唱了大量情歌，但她的魔力并不来自对爱情的表达，而是对音乐的真爱。

陈淑桦的温柔诠释与Ocean更外放、率真的演唱成了对比。也许是补偿她爱意的温和，陈淑桦版里把副歌多唱了一遍。到最后，当她轻言“I love you”时，我已被说服；连我的猫都知道Sarah的诚意。毕竟，陈淑桦对音乐的热爱是不可超越的。她的歌声固然美丽，但让作品久远生辉的是那种与音乐合而为一的爱。

《爱的奇迹》就这样延续下来。如今，在陈淑桦消失于公众视野三十年后，她对音乐的热爱仍历历可感，是她永远不变的爱的箴言。
